Thanksgiving in October

Since my brother and Jacob will be leaving before Thanksgiving my family will be partaking in an early Turkey Day. Jacob’s mom is in town from New York which makes it that much more meaningful since our families will be together.

This year I am thankful for:
1) My family and that we are together for the second time this year! Once on the cruise and now that Cameron and Jacob are home. It is not often we get to be together but every moment is special!
2) My friends/loved ones who encourage, challenge, love, and support me no matter what.
3) The opportunities I have been given the past year. I have had amazing experiences both personally and professionally which have helped me to learn and grow.
4) And, finally, I am thankful for the health any happiness of myself and those around me.

Thanksgiving isn’t about a certain date – to me it’s about taking a day to be grateful for those around and all that I have been given. This year I get to it two days! How fun is that!

Smith Family Fun Day 2013
Last year when Cameron and Jacob were home I established Smith Family Fun Day and we had a full day of events. The day started with an adventure to Washington Farms (located in Watkinsville, GA which is close to Athens). If you are looking to get in the fall spirit then this is the place to go to. They have everything from pumpkin slingshots, a giant pillow top, and corn canons, to the necessities of hayrides, corn mazes and a pumpkin patch.

The highlight of the day, however, is when they do pig races. It is truly a hysterical event and no words can describe it – it is something you have to see to believe. There were several races which ended with pigs jumping into water and swimming across. It turns out pigs really can fly….

After the adventures at Washington Farms we drove over to Athens which is only 20 minutes away to hit a few of the hot spots for day drinking. The first stop was Trappeze Pub and then we headed over to the Georgia Theater for a little rooftop relaxing. Lucky for me, both had great cider options so I was one happy girl!

The day ended with carving pumpkins we picked off the vine and a Gamecock win over Missouri in overtime. It was truly an amazing day and proves you are never too old to have a family fun day.

This year we are hoping to have a similar sort of schedule for Saturday before we have Thanksgiving but the itinerary has not been set yet. I will definitely fill you in on the adventure that will follow. 🙂

Shop with Purpose!
Also, it is almost the best time of the year…Partner’s Card time! Every year my mom and I go on a large shopping expedition with the Partner’s Card. It is a one week (two weekends) 20% discount on a ton of shops and restaurants in Atlanta the catch is, you have to buy the card for $60. BUT the money all goes towards Camp Twin Lakes which is an amazing cause. We always end up saving more than we spent on the $60 card. My mom and I have never missed a year and I came home from college every year for it. It comes at the perfect time of the year because it will actually start to feel like fall by then so you can get all the latest styles at 20% off. Check out their website here for a full list of the shops and restaurants.

Some of my favorite shops are:
Kendra Scott, Luna, Madewell, Swoozie’s. Fab’rik, Festivity, Patagonia, J. Crew.

South City Kitchen, ONE midtown kitchen, TWO Urban Licks, Piece of Cake.
